What Out-of-State Students Should Know About Concealed Carry Laws

On Behalf of The Foley Law Firm | September 9, 2021

Students come from virtually every state in the country to attend Colorado’s many colleges and universities. Because a number of these states have stricter gun laws than Colorado, many students don’t realize that there are limits to their right to carry a gun here, both on campus and off.

Here we’re going to focus on concealed carry laws. However, if you want to carry a gun in Colorado, learning much more about our weapons laws is crucial. Running afoul of them can have serious ramifications for your education and your life.

What if you have a concealed carry permit from your home state?

Colorado recognizes valid concealed carry permits from the majority of states because we have reciprocal agreements with them. If the state where your permit was issued is one of them, then you still have to meet several requirements to carry a concealed handgun. For example, you must be a resident of that state and have a valid driver’s license or other state ID from there. You also must be at least 21-years-old.

Note that these states whose permits are recognized can change at any time. Reciprocity is based on whether another state recognizes valid Colorado Concealed Handgun Permits (CHPs).

Can you carry a concealed handgun on campus?

The regulations for carrying a concealed handgun on a college or university campus vary by school. It’s essential to know and follow those regulations as well.

For example, at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder), those with a valid permit can carry a concealed handgun in most places on campus. However, weapons are not permitted in residence halls, and concealed guns aren't allowed in a “special events zone.” That typically includes any ticketed event such as a concert or game.

If you or a loved one is facing gun charges, it’s crucial that you seek legal guidance. Weapons-related convictions can carry serious penalties that can follow you for the rest of your life.
