Common crimes committed on college campuses

On Behalf of The Foley Law Firm | April 9, 2018

Modern college students face a lot of challenges. Classes are stressful. Tuition costs -- and debt -- seem to get higher every year. Bullying doesn't end in high school, and it can make life harder for college students. The list goes on.

When students were asked in a survey about what issues they faced, though, it is interesting to note the criminal activity they claimed was happening. Looking at some of the main crimes they reported can help paint a picture of what college life is like and what potential charges students may face.

A few issues on the list -- with the percentage of students who identified these issues -- include the following:

  • Binge drinking and alcohol abuse (32 percent) Of course, many college students can legally drink, but the prevalence of this issue -- it is third overall on the list -- shows that many underage students are likely involved and could face charges. Drinking may also lead to drunk driving charges in some cases.
  • Drug abuse (16 percent) This percentage would likely be even higher, but it only refers to non-prescription drugs. Many prescription medications, such as painkillers, may also be used.
  • Drunk driving (15 percent) As noted above, this goes along with an alcohol abuse and binge drinking culture.
  • Bullying (11 percent) Colorado has anti-bullying laws. It's not just common behavior. It's illegal.
  • Hazing (7 percent) Hazing could be systematic bullying by a group, such as a sports team or a fraternity.
  • Theft (5 percent) Many students live in shared housing that may make theft harder to avoid.

Students who are facing charges for anything from theft to drunk driving to illegal drug use need to know what legal defense options they have.
