Animal Assault Case Involves Hitting Police Dog

On Behalf of The Foley Law Firm | July 24, 2015

Assaults against people are serious offenses. Assaults against animals, unless it was a matter of self-defense, is also a serious offense. Anyone who is accused of an assault against an animal will want to seek criminal defense counsel.

A recent case in Colorado Springs, Colorado, was based on the suspect hitting a police dog. At the time, on a Monday morning in July, the suspect was already being arrested. That arrest was based on a warrant that had been issued after he failed to comply with a narcotics violation.

Officers had gotten word that he was hiding out at a home, and approached it that morning. They saw the suspect run through the house and then out the back door. According to police, they gave him three canine warnings. He ignored them. Police then released a canine named Broc to apprehend the man.

Broc bit the man. The man tried to escape, and in the process of doing so, hit Broc repeatedly on the head. Officers put the man in handcuffs. He was taken to the hospital for treatment for the injuries he got from the dog.

The incident resulted in additional charges for the man. One was obstructing a peace officer, and the other was obstructing a police dog. The dog's condition has not been publicly reported

Those who find themselves in this situation will want to be able to make a full and accurate account of what happened. They may feel that their actions were justified in so far as constituting self defense. Being able to give specifics and share those with a trusted attorney will allow the facts to be understood and the best possible criminal defense to be pursued.
